Support Miramonte

Why Giving Matters

California currently ranks 45 out of 50 states in spending per pupil based on Education Week’s January 2008 report. Since Proposition 13 passed in 1978, funding for public education has been constrained. School districts throughout California have had to rely on financial support from parents and community members to meet essential school needs.

Funding per student

Miramonte is part of the
Acalanes Union High School district which ranks 77th of the 88 high school districts in California in terms of revenue limit funding received from the state. Per student state funding at Miramonte is about 20% less than comparably ranked schools in California and up to 40% less than comparable schools in other states such as Connecticut or Illinois.

Were Miramonte a private school, tuition would be tens of thousands of dollars. Miramonte would continue to seek additional fundraising and parents would continue to pay taxes.

Funding from parent organizations, Education Foundation of Orinda and parcel taxes represent 19% of the 2008-2009 budget. These critical funding sources are essential to providing the superior education expected of the Miramonte community. The State of California continues to experience budget constraints and consequently Miramonte will have to increase private funding from the Parents' Club and the Education Foundation of Orinda to maintain educational excellence.

We cannot afford to take Miramonte’s excellence for granted. It is easy to give to Miramonte Parents’ Club. Public funding alone will never guarantee academic excellence or well-equipped classes for our students. Very simply stated, giving to the Parents’ Club is essential to continue Miramonte academic excellence.

Ways to Give

Every year parents, alumni and businesses have been generous with donations of time and money.  Because of the generous support from the community, Miramonte High School is able to provide resources to advance education and character development at Miramonte High School.

Your contributions will support educational opportunities for current and future students and enable MHS to model the highest standard for secondary education.

As a public school, there are many needs at Miramonte for which public funding is inadequate. Each parent organization services a different set of needs. Consequently, there are many ways to give to Miramonte during online registration or anytime through the webstore:

1.      Support education at Miramonte by donating to the Miramonte Parents’ Club in addition to your EFO contribution. You may donate to the Parents’ Club in one or more of the following ways:

·   Membership

·   E-scrip

·   Wall of Excellence

·   At the Workplace

  1. Support after school sports at Miramonte by donating to the Boosters Club.

  1. Support visual and performing arts programs at Miramonte by making a contribution to EFO and the Visual & Performing Arts Association.

  1. Support Class Activities by making the annual class activities donation for your grade level.  Parents and students organize activities to raise funds for Class Activities such as Junior Ball, Senior Ball and Grad Night. Funds raised enable the Classes to maintain reasonable ticket prices for these events thus enabling all Miramonte students to participate. Funds raised by your Class are restricted for use for your grade level activites.

Please make a contribution today and help continue Miramonte High School’s tradition of excellence.  Financial contributions are tax deductible. See Big Picture for a high level summary of needs funded by each organization.

Making Tomorrow Happen

MTP

Making Tomorrow Possible is the MHS Parents’ Club membership drive that provides funding for critical academic support along with extensive student programs and services at MHS. It is one of the main reasons that our high school ranks among the very best in California.  The Parents' Club must raise approximately $300 per family to fund its commitment to MHS for the 2009/2010 school year to support Academic Programs, Student Programs, and Services

We are asking you to become a member of the MHS Parents’ Club by giving through the Making Tomorrow Possible campaign.  By joining the Parents’ Club now, you are ensuring the continuation of key academic programs and services which may be at risk without your funding support. This membership drive is our only planned fundraiser for the school year, so it is critical that we receive everyone’s participation in becoming a Parents’ Club member now.  Miramonte teachers and students are counting on it!

You can make a one time paymentvia the WebStore or you may choose to pay in installments using our payment plan. Either donation can be made using a secure server with a Visa or MasterCard.

Funding Needs

How funding decisions are made

In addition to state funding, Miramonte High School receives funding from four other organizations: The Miramonte Parents Club, EFO, Boosters and VPA.

The Miramonte High School Coordinating Council includes representatives from each of the four organizations and also School Administrators. Beginning in January, the Coordinating Council Budget Committee compiles the listing of funding requests from teachers and staff that have been approved and prioritized by Department Heads. The various funding organizations then determine which needs they are able to fund. With this coordinated approach, duplication is avoided and funding of the various programs is maximized. A high level summary of funding by organization for 2009-2010 is shown below:

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

Miramonte High School Parents' Club relies exclusively on parent volunteers to support a wide variety of programs.  There are many opportunities to contribute your expertise and enthusiasm to improve students’ experiences and development while at Miramonte High.  Help is needed to support the Healthy Choices program, assist in community service activities, help families in times of need, celebrate students and staff, raise funds, and much, much more.

Volunteer opportunities at MHS are coordinated through Jacquie Godsill, Parents' Club Volunteer Coordinator.  For more information contact VolunteerCoordinator09@mhspc.org.  Similarly, Boosters' Club and Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) both rely on parent volunteers to make their programs successful at Miramonte.

Do you have a special skill, talent or interest that you'd like to contribute to the school? Even if you only have time to help with one or more events, your help will be valuable. Please let us know by completing and submitting the volunteer form. We welcome all kinds of help!

Miramonte and EFO

Miramonte and EFO working together

The three Miramonte parent organizations on campus and Education Foundation of Orinda (EFO) all work together to support the various events and activities at Miramonte that otherwise would not be possible through public funding sources. See detailed Funding Chart.

Together, the Miramonte Parents' Club and EFO provide essential funding for annual education costs at Miramonte. On a combined basis, the two organizations provide approximately 7% of the annual academic funding per student.

Miramonte Parents' Clubraises money solely for use at Miramonte. For the 2009-2010 school year the Parents’ Club will provide approximately $300,000 or $300 per family towards academic support.  The Parents’ Club supplies much needed materials and instructional supplies for classrooms and laboratories. It provides significant funding for student programs and activities as well as lab equipment and classroom technology.

EFO raises money for all schools in Orinda including Miramonte, Orinda Intermediate School, and the four elementary schools.  EFO asks for a contribution on a per student basis and allocates funds to each school based on student population, striving to provide the same school experience for each student.  For the 2008-2009 school year, EFO will provide $582,000, or about $440 per student, to Miramonte. This will cover salaries and benefits to maintain class size reduction and additional counselors and assistants. EFO also provides funding for enrichment programs and visual and performing arts support.

It's so important that all parents support the fundraising campaigns of both Miramonte Parents’ Club and EFO. Every Miramonte teacher and student will benefit!

Boosters  is the sole organization that raises funds for after school sports. These funds cover costs for the athletic trainer, weight room supervisor and equipment and supplies for all sports teams.

VPA provides funding for program support of visual and performing arts programs and the VPA senior awards.
