Coach Sopak was named the Miramonte Varsity Head Coach in June of 2009 following 5 years at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, CA. The last four of which were as the Varsity Coach. During that span the Broncos compiled a 94-20 win/loss record, claimed two League Championships (2006 DFAL co w/Miramonte & 2009 DVAL) and reached back to back Section Championship Appearances IN 2008 & 2009 as well as two straight Nor Cal CIF State Championship appearances.
During his career at Northgate coach Sopak has placed 19 players on various All League Teams. Following the 2009 DVAL season Sopak had a record seven players earn All League, including the League MVP and two 1st Team players. In addition, Sopak has seen three of his players in the past four years take home MVP honors.
Coach Sopak is actively involved at Santa Maria Parrish, Orinda's Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). Kelly has coached grades 2nd through 8th over the past 9 years, often coaching multiple teams. In 2004 Kelly was selected as the Parrish Athletic Director wherein he oversees the entire Girls CYO Program at Santa Maria. As a coach at Santa Maria Coach Sopak has guided three different teams at three different grade levels (4th 2009, 7th Grade 2005 & 8th Grade 2005) to Diocsean Championships.
In addition to coaching high school and CYO, Coach Sopak is also the Founder & Director of the Cal Stars Basketball Club based here in Orinda. Coach Sopak founded the Cal Stars in 2006 as an exclusive Northgate program. The Stars were expanded in 2007 to include kids from all over Northern California. The Cal Stars feature teams from the 3rd grade through High School. Through his high school and AAU coaching, coach Sopak has sent several of these players to college.
Currently Coach Sopak is a State Farm Insurance Agent in Albany, CA and has been with State Farm for more than 15 years. A native of Puyallup (pew el up), WA Kelly was a 3 sport letterwinner in High School and went on to play division 1 baseball in college. Coach Sopak graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a major in Criminal Justice. Kelly also lives here in Orinda with his wife (Beverley) and two daughters (Lauren 10 & Leah 7).
